What is hair loss (alopecia)?

Alopecia is a clinical term used to describe hair loss on the head or body. It can be caused by certain illnesses, medications or lifestyle factors, but the most widespread type of alopecia is the genetic disorder male pattern baldness. This condition affects up to half of men by the age of 50, and it often begins in the late twenties. It is identifiable by a receding of the hairline followed by a thinning on top of the head. In some cases, it progresses to total baldness. Although this condition is not a health concern, it can cause embarrassment and make people feel self-conscious about their appearance. For this reason, many sufferers are keen to find effective treatments.

What causes it?

The various forms of alopecia have different causes. In the case of male pattern hair loss, the trigger is hereditary and it can be passed down from both the mother and father’s side of the family. This genetic condition causes testosterone to be converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can have a harmful effect on follicles. The damage caused by DHT can slow or stop the production of hair.

How does treatment work?

There are now effective treatment options available for people with male pattern baldness, and the earlier these individuals start using them, the better the results tend to be. Propecia, which contains the active ingredient finasteride, works by inhibiting the formation of DHT, thereby reducing its effect on follicles. It can slow down or stop the balding process, and in some cases it can even reverse it. Taken as a daily tablet, the treatment has been shown to be effective in nine in 10 men who have mild to moderate hair loss and it usually starts working within three to four months. At Europa, we stock both Finasteride and the branded version Propecia.

We also provide Regaine, a solution that contains the active ingredient minoxidil. This works by stimulating follicles to transition from their resting to their growth phase. It also makes this growth phase longer and can cause follicles to become thicker, leading to fuller hair. Studies have shown it to have positive effects for 60% of users. Bear in mind that it can take eight to 16 weeks for results to show.
